In July 2023, the Goffinet family entrusted the Hôtel des Ventes de Monte Carlo with the task of auctioning an object of major historical importance: the Scepter of Empress Charlotte of Mexico.
We come back to this exceptional sale.
Empress Charlotte, daughter of King Leopold II of Belgium, received this Scepter as a personal present from the Municipality of San Juan del Rio. Repatriated from Mexico by Baron Goffinet, some time before the assassination of her husband, Emperor Maximilian, by the Mexican Republicans, she returned to her residence in Trieste, Italy.
After Charlotte's death, it remained in loving hands and was carefully preserved in its original case. First within the Belgian royal family, then within the Goffinet family to this day.
The Goffinet family served the Belgian royal family over three generations and were ennobled in recognition of their services to the Palace and the Kingdom. It has always maintained close relations with National Museums, historians and public utility foundations.
This exceptional acquisition was made by the CRTrieste Foundation with the aim of exhibiting it at the Museum of the Castle of Miramare, residence of the Empress.
The Scepter will thus have returned to the historical collections of the imperial couple.
