RARE MASQUE FUNERAIRE

Proche-Orient, circa XIVe-XIIIe siècle av. J.-C.
A Near-Eastern gold sheet embossed Funerary Mask. Depicting a male face. *RARE PYXIS
Argent et Bronze. Diam. 20 cm
Bactriane, Fin du IIIe-début du IIe millénaire av. J.-C.
A Bactrian Silver Pyxis with lid. The pyxis has a concave-shaped exterior, a convex-shaped interior and a flat circular base. It is likely that it was used as a mirror support. On the sides six lying lions with engraved manes. The lid is embossed in the shape of a twisted snake, with a raised crest in the shape of a snake's head in the center. This type of pyxis was used to contain mirrors. They were made of various materials, such as wood (fig.1) or silver with different decorations; geometric and animalistic. Here the decor refers to the classic iconographic repertoire of the BMAC. Representing through powerful animal figures the cosmic battle between the forces of Good (symbolized by the lions) and Evil (the snake). This recurring iconography (fig.2) (Metropolitan Museum, NY, 1989.281.42) attests to the central place of nature and its elements in the religious and social practices of the Bronze Age. VASE
Chlorite, 14 x 8,7 cm; Diam. 12,4 cm
Bactriane, IIIe millénaire av. J.-C.
A Bactrian Chlorite Jar. Hemispherical in shape, the body decorated with "chaotic" waves and similar to the vase kept at the Jiroft Museum (fig.1) (Hesari Piran 1384/2005: 11, 9990). VASE
Chlorite. H. 4,3 cm ; Diam. 5,2 cm
Bactriane, IIIe millénaire av. J.-C.
A Bactrina Chlorite Jar. Hemispherical in shape, the body decorated with scorpions. The scorpion, like the snake, the lion is part of the iconographic repertoire favored for this type of vase. Indeed, ornamentation is mainly borrowed from the animal world, not from domestic animals (ox, sheep, goat, etc.) but from wild animals, including those which have horns, teeth, claws, beaks, claws or venomous fangs (cfr. “The iconography of vases and chlorite objects from Jiroft (Iran),” Paléorient 31/2, 2005, pp. 123-52.). 3rd Millennium B.C.

POIDS A ANSE
Chlorite. 19,2x23,6x3 cm
Bactriane, IIIe millénaire av. J.-C.
A Bactrian chlorite "hand bag weight" with sculpted scenes. On one side, two eagles with widespreaded wings. On the other side, two entwisted dragon-snakes, an eagle a male figure. E. Porada believed that scenes with snakes and eagles indicate the struggle between them, and she refers to the story of the Eagle and Snake, inserted in the Mesopotamian "Epic of Etana" (Porada, 1965, p. 42). But in Bactria and Margiana both the eagles and the snakes personified benevolent forces. 3rd Millennium B.C.E.
