COLLIER ESCLAVAGE
Epoque XIXème, Poitou.
An enamel, glass and 18k gold necklace, 18th Century, Poitou (West of France).
Note : un modèle similaire est conservé au musée de Niort.
Les colliers "esclavage" étaient les cadeaux des jeunes fiancés à leur promise avant le mariage au XIXème siècle. Il symbolisait la future condition de la mariée, non pas dans un sens péjoratif, mais comme attachement de l'un à l'autre.
Cette tradition était répandue dans quelques régions : la Normandie, la Bresse, l'Auvergne, le Poitou, la Manche, le Calvados et Paris.
Le collier se composait d'une à plusieurs chaînes agrémentées de plaques émaillées. Le nombre de chaînes pouvait signifier l'aisance de la famille et l'importance de la dot, ou en Normandie, le nombre d’enfants.
Les chaînes étaient agrémentées de motifs sentimentaux : des bleuets, des paniers de fleurs, des colombes, des autels d'amour, émaillés, souvent en bleu; et ponctuées d'une à trois plaques (la centrale étant la plus importante) ovales ou rectangulaires, serties de pierres d'imitation.
A la fin du XIXème siècle, cette pratique était passée de mode.
