Antique Paintings and Drawings
The proximity of Italy and the steady local presence of connoisseurs from all continents help to support auctions in the face of highly active international professionals and collectors for high-quality artworks. With the assistance of Éric Turquin (paintings) and Benjamin Peronnet (drawings), who are both experts and have experience in Anglo-Saxon auction houses, Monaco has had some great auction successes.
A few examples include
a small, extremely rare portrait drawing by François Clouet (1510–1572), reasonably estimated to fetch €100,000–150,000, was quickly snapped up for €810,000.
A series of decorative canvases by Gaspard Dughet (1615–1675) broke records by selling for €370,000.
A “caprice” by Bernardo Bellotto (1721–1780) remained in the collection of an art lover in the Principality following lively bidding that finished at €830,000.
